Swerdling garden

Mediterranean

Although beautifully constructed, the Swerdling residence required a significant makeover of many key elements. Its architectural style drives the landscape’s design, while Moroccan and Southwestern motifs accent this Spanish home. Exterior patios of Saltillo tile and a Moorish fountain in the formal rose garden were paired with a mosaic-tiled entry inside the house.

A wall fountain, gourmet kitchen and small fireplace repeat the colorful mosaic tile work in the rear yard, where the lap pool and raised terrace around it dominate. The surrounding walls were painted terracotta, dramatizing the Mediterranean plantings and enriching the entire atmosphere. All aspects of the property — including the house’s colors, iron railings, gates, pool, paving, furniture and accessories — were involved in the redesign to assure the integration of the Spanish theme with other influences.
